November 1 is Extra Mile Day

The Extra Mile Foundation was created in 2009 at which time Extra Mile Day was proclaimed. Founder, Shawn Anderson said, “Our work is inspired by the belief that going the extra mile opens doors to new possibilities. Going the extra mile improves the results we find in life, both professionally and personally…it allows us to make a difference in our community and in our world.”

The day aims to encourage people to go the extra mile to achieve what they have always wanted. Mayors of cities across the United States and elsewhere in the world sign a proclamation on 1 November urging individuals in the community to take time to not only “go the extra mile” in his or her own life, but to also acknowledge all those who are inspirational in their efforts and commitment to make their organizations, families, community, country, or world a better place.

How to Celebrate Extra Mile Day

Going the extra mile isn’t necessarily connected to your work life. This could benefit any sphere of your life. Perhaps this is the day you make your partner breakfast in bed or run an extra kilometre in your workout. Just do more than you usually do.

It’s a great time to examine where you are in your career. Ask yourself if this is where you want to be or is there something extra you could do to take your career to the next level? What is that extra push that you could give to make yourself more likely to get that promotion or increase that you’ve had your eye on or simply to be a more valuable employee?

Extra Mile Day for Leaders

Business leaders and managers should use this day to lead from the front and set a great example by putting in that extra bit of work or attention that makes the workplace more pleasant and more efficient. Observing Extra Mile Day in this way really can be a win-win experience for management.
