Think of the Possibilities
Think how much more fulfilling your life would be if you overcame your fears. Well, the first step on that particular journey is to face those fears. Whether you suffer from anxiety and phobias – rational or irrational – or whether you just need more motivation and courage to face your life, Face Your Fears Day on 12 October provides us with the opportunity to take some bold steps forward.
Fear Leads to Regret
We have all read those surveys where people on their death beds were asked about their regrets. The number one response is “I never pursued my dreams and aspirations.” People regret being too afraid to take the plunge and do the things that they dreamed of. When it comes to career choices, we are so often afraid to try something new. Perhaps it is the fear of failure or the fear of poverty that prohibit us from making brave career moves, but are these worth the risk of feeling regret at the end of your life?
Also in the top ten regrets dying people have is that they never had the courage to live truthfully. People regret not living as their authentic selves. They spend years – or even a lifetime – pretending to be someone they are not because they fear the reactions of others should they reveal their true character. Face the fear and be truthful to yourself.
Even the most irrational of fears can impede the fun in your life. For example, a friend who has a bird phobia has mentioned that she is unable to accompany her children on certain outings because of this crippling fear; while another friend who is petrified of sharks has missed out on countless hours of holiday fun, when the reality is that you have a statistically higher chance of being killed by a champagne cork than by a shark.
Face your fears and stop them from holding you back from experiencing all of the joy life has to offer.
